Observerships have no University of Toronto status

Observers do not register with the Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) Office.  Doctors who wish to arrange an observership must do so by contacting the hospital in which they wish to have observer status.  The PGME Office receives a high volume of inquiries regarding observership opportunities at the following hospitals in Toronto:

Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre:

Persons interested in an observership at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre must apply directly to the departmental office of the specialty in which they wish to have observer status. The Credentials Office issues observer credentials at the request of the hospital’s departmental offices.

Hospital for Sick Children:

Medical practitioners interested in obtaining observer status at the Hospital for Sick Children must apply directly to the departmental office of the specialty in which they wish to have observer status.

Mount Sinai Hospital:

The Medical Education Office at Mount Sinai Hospital indicates that observerships there are no longer than one month and must originate with a request from a staff physician. Prospective observers need to apply directly to the departmental office of the specialty in which they wish to have observer status.

Women’s College Hospital:

At Women’s College Hospital prospective observers must arrange their observership through a staff physician at the hospital, who will notify the hospital’s Medical Education Office.

University Health Network:

At the University Health Network, those who wish to arrange observerships must do so through the UHN Observerships Office – https://www.uhn.ca/healthcareprofessionals/Observerships/Pages/default.aspx

Centre for Addiction and Mental Health:

For those interested in a clinical observership at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), please contact the CAMH Student Centre for an application at Student.Centre@camh.ca

College of Physicians & Surgeons of Ontario Policy on Shadowing and Observerships

College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO), the body which regulates the practice of medicine in the province of Ontario, has a Delegation of Controlled Acts policy that is relevant to the practice of allowing internationally trained medical graduates to observe patient care in clinical settings.
